United Kingdom Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert List with 11 Countries

British government has placed an additional eleven further nations to its official alert roster concerning the threats of industrial alcohol contamination from tainted alcoholic drinks.

This revised warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "an international surge in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of methanol toxicity.

Only a few weeks ago, authorities had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to multiple high-profile events like the tragic death of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can lead to vision loss or loss of life within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance often employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. It is not meant for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the production of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the purification method.

Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and since it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.

Official Guidance for Travellers

Government minister the minister emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"While having drinks overseas, stick to trusted places and refrain from local brews or free shots," the minister said.

"In case something appears suspicious, for example a headache that's much more severe than normal or vision problems – contact a doctor immediately."

The complete roster of destinations noted as carrying a threat of methanol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
